Democratic Rep. Proposes Bill to Keep Twice Impeached Presidents from Being Commemorated
A new bill proposed by House Democrat Rep. Linda Sanchez of California seeks to prevent twice impeached presidents, namely Donald Trump, from receiving any sort of benefits or commemoration, including burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
In late January, Sanchez introduced House Bill 484, The No Glory For Hate Act, which would forbid the use of federal funds for any symbol, monument, structure, building or public land commemorating a president twice impeached by the House of Representatives.
The measure also excludes twice impeached presidents from receiving the following benefits:
- Pension,
- Staff,
- office travel expenses, and
- burial in Arlington National Cemetery
In a statement published by Sanchez, she explained that the Capitol building attack on Jan. 6 is what prompted her to compose the bill.
“For years, Donald Trump poured gasoline on lies, encouraging racism and hatred, then lit the match on January 6th. A president who has been impeached twice does not deserve the honors bestowed on a former president,” she contended. “We should never glorify the hatred Donald Trump personified as President. This bill ensures that there is no glory for hate – not a building, statue, or even a park bench.”
Sanchez was barricaded inside a locked office when the riot at the nation’s capitol took place. The congresswoman was only armed with baseball bats that she uses for Congressional baseball games.
“I remember getting the horrifying news that no one was coming to help us – that the National Guard had not gotten approval – while police officers were being beaten and overrun,” she recalled. “I thought, no one who stirs up this seditionist act should ever be held to the same high standards we hold for our former presidents who served with grace.”
While Trump is no longer the president, Sanchez argued that he should “still be held accountable for his actions and the taxpayers should not foot the bill for his future actions.”
“I can’t imagine sending students in Southern California – or anywhere in America – to a school named in honor of a traitorous president,” she concluded.
Sanchez isn’t the only Democrat from Congress to take drastic action against the former President.
As Christian Headlines previously reported, Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi filed a lawsuit against Trump on Tuesday for the Capitol riot in the wake of Trump’s acquittal from the Senate last weekend.
