Syria denies Israel may fund vaccines as part of prisoner swap deal

Mass media reports stating that Israel may fund a batch of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine for Syria are untrue, according Syria’s state news agency SANA.The development comes following a report by Asharq Al-Awsat earlier Saturday morning, stating that Israel would fund the vaccines as part of this week’s prisoner swap.
Sources, reportedly from Tel Aviv, told the London-based Arab newspaper on Friday that a “secret agreement” between Israel and Syria had been made, and that it could be related to the vaccines. It remains unclear how much Israel will spend, or how many vaccines will be donated.

Israel requested permission from Russia to disclose what was promised to Syria under the prisoner swap deal, KAN News reported on Friday, but the Kremlin reportedly has not “changed its position in the issue.”
The issue was noted by Joint List faction chairman Ahmad Tibi in a Friday tweet.
“Do we have to wait for a Jew to cross the border into Gaza in order for [Palestinians] to receive vaccines?” Tibi wrote following a comment on how he had raised a demand in the Knesset for vaccines to be transferred to Gaza.

Earlier this week, Syria released a young Israeli woman captured a few weeks prior, after she crossed over the Israeli-Syrian border. Negotiations for her release were mediated by Russia. The woman landed in Israel on Friday morning, after government hostage negotiator Yaron Bloom flew to Moscow to bring her back.
An Israeli doctor examined the woman from the haredi town of Modi’in Illit in Moscow on Wednesday, and found that she was healthy and did not seem to have been hurt in Syria.
On Thursday, the IDF handed over two shepherds to Red Cross representatives through the Quneitra Crossing in Syria, after they had been apprehended by IDF troops east of the security fence in the Golan Heights area in Israeli territory. Lahav Harkov and Udi Shaham contributed to this report.
