Having One Full-Time Earner, One Stay-at-Home Parent Is Ideal, Most Married American Mothers Say

In a new survey by American Compass, most married American moms said they preferred it if one parent works full-time and another stays home with the kids.

While the survey did not say outright that it should be a mom who stays home, the survey still shows America’s tradition of a single breadwinner is still a popular desire.

According to the survey, 53 percent of married moms feel having a single breadwinner is ideal. However, this varies by wage-earning status. Among the upper class, the most popular choice was using paid child-care full time and having both parents work full time. But in all other income groups, the one parent breadwinner tradition was seen as most preferable.

According to the survey, “While these attitudes are widely shared across family structures, they differ by socioeconomic status. Whereas lower-, working-, and middle-class adults are most likely to choose a full-time worker and a stay-at-home parent as their ideal, upper-class adults prefer both parents to work full-time and to rely on paid childcare.”

The survey adds that while “American attitudes about family structure vary widely, most families see a full-time earner and a stay-at-home parent as the ideal arrangement for raising young children.”

The survey also covered things like whether Americans believe they are living the American Dream, whether the government should support families financially, and even if parents are having the number of children they would like to have.

According to the survey, only 25 percent of Americans say they are living the American Dream, while 55 percent say they are only “getting by, but don’t have the life they want.” Further, 20 percent of survey respondents said they are “struggling and worried for the future.”

The survey also found that most Americans do not have as many children as they would like.
