AMNESTY ALERT: House to Test Waters on Immigration Overhaul With Votes on Two Bills; House to debate immigration reform as GOP blasts Biden over border crisis, and related stories

House to Test Waters on Immigration Overhaul With Votes on Two Bills:

The House is set to vote on two immigration bills this week, the first steps in Democrats’ effort to see what, if anything, they can accomplish on the issue this year.

The White House and congressional Democratic leaders have said immigration is one of their priority issues for this Congress. So far, though, they haven’t settled on how ambitious their approach will be or whether they are willing to compromise with Republicans to pass legislation. Democrats have a narrow majority in the House, and are pressing to pass as much as they can quickly, though many of the bills face steep odds in the evenly divided Senate.

Aides to President Biden have said they are embracing a “multiple trains leaving the station” approach, lobbying for the president’s comprehensive immigration bill as well as several narrower bills. Two of those measures will be voted on this week: One would provide a path to citizenship for young immigrants, known as Dreamers, who came to the U.S. as children and have lived in the country illegally, and hundreds of thousands of immigrants living in the U.S. with a humanitarian protection called Temporary Protected Status. The other would provide a path to citizenship for farmworkers in the country illegally.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.), who with other progressives has advocated for a far-reaching immigration overhaul, said delaying a vote on the comprehensive package was a sign that the broader bill doesn’t yet have the entire party’s backing. “There are concerns in the caucus on the appetite of moderate members,” she said.

The intraparty split over strategy shows a growing concern among progressive Democrats that not acting on the issue could cost them with base voters in the 2022 midterm elections.

The debate in Congress begins as soaring numbers of migrant children and families are being arrested at the border, where many come to seek asylum. The surge is straining government resources, pressuring border towns and providing fodder for the president’s political opponents. —>READ MORE HERE

House to debate immigration reform as GOP blasts Biden over border crisis:

The House of Representatives will debate two bills aimed at reforming the US immigration system next week, as Republican leaders slam President Biden for allowing the crisis at the southern border to spiral out of control.

Hordes of Central American migrants — including thousands of unaccompanied children — have rushed across in recent weeks, a crisis that the White House’s coordinator on the border conceded Wednesday is presumably tied to messaging from the Biden administration.

Next week, the House will debate two bills aimed at fixing “our broken immigration system,” according to a schedule released Thursday by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.).

One, the American Dream and Promise Act, would establish a path to citizenship for millions of young illegal immigrants, including those afforded temporary protected status dubbed “Dreamers.” —>READ MORE HERE
