Kevin Quinn ‘Rediscovered’ His Faith While Filming Netflix Faith-based Musical A Week Away
The lead actor in the new Netflix musical A Week Away says he hopes the story will lead people to embrace their faith without shame or fear.
Actor Kevin Quinn told Christian Headlines he rediscovered his faith while making the faith-based film, which follows the story of a troubled teen who finds romance and the gospel while attending a summer church camp. Quinn (Disney’s Bunk’d, A Christmas Love Story) plays the teen, Will.
A Week Away launches on Netflix on March 26. Alan Powell (The Song, Like Arrows) co-wrote and co-produced it.
“I was going through a bit of an existential crisis, which sounds crazy, but I think my faith was shaken. And A Week Awayreally brought back some of the things that were important in my life and made me realize just how important faith was in my life. So A Week Away not only was a catalyst for Will, it was a catalyst for me as Kevin Quinn, to be reintroduced to my faith.”
His own songs in the film, Quinn said, reflect his personal thoughts and feelings.
Quinn added, “I’ve had questions about the world and existence. And I took a lot of that into the film, and I took a lot of that into the character.”
The film features music from Steven Curtis Chapman, for King and Country, Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith.
It also stars Bailee Madison (Bridge to Terabithia), David Koechner (Anchorman series) and Sherri Shepherd (30 Rock).
Quinn said the film has multiple themes, although “one of the most important messages” – especially for teens – “is don’t be afraid of faith.”
“Because it can be scary and intimidating,” Quinn said. “… Trust that He has your best interest at heart. Your faith journey is your journey. And no one can take that away from you. No one can negate it. And don’t be afraid to embrace it. And I think people are sometimes afraid that it’s, like, taboo or unacceptable. It’s not.”
