Baylor University to Face Gonzaga University in NCAA Championship
The top-seeded Baylor University Bears defeated the Houston Cougars 78-59 to advance to the NCAA championship game. This is the first time since 1950 that Baylor, a Christian university, has made it to the final four, and the first time since 1948 that Baylor University has made it to the championship game.
The Bears finished shooting 53 percent and made 11 of 24 3-pointers. Jared Butler, one of the star players for Baylor University, said in a statement obtained by Fox News, “That was one of my goals, to leave a legacy at Baylor. And you have to win national championships. You have to win. You have to be a great program, be about great things, and that’s what we’re doing.”
They will face no. 1 overall seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs at 9:20 pm EST on Monday.
According to Odds Shark, Gonzaga, which has an undefeated record of 31-0, is favored to win the tournament. Baylor currently has a record of 27-2 overall.
The odds are currently with Gonzaga because of players Drew Timme and Jalen Suggs. Pickswise reports that “Timme has been a superstar in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 22 points per game and making defenders look silly while doing it.”
Davion Mitchell, however, “is the key to Baylor’s potent offense due to his elite quickness and three-point shooting ability. If you pressure him to take away his three-point shot, he will blow by you.”
However, not everyone agrees, with many believing Baylor is poised to win. Another analysis from Pickswise reports that Baylor has the “scoring guards necessary to keep up” with Gonzaga’s heavy scorers. Additionally, “Each of those guys average at least 14 points per game, and that kind of offensive diversity is exactly what you need against Gonzaga. Even if one of them is having an off night, the other two can step up.”
