At Least Eight Dead in Mass Shooting at Indianapolis FedEx Facility

At least eight people were shot dead at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis on Thursday night.

Seven people were reportedly injured in the attack, though Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Genae Cook said in a news release that others were independently brought to hospitals with injuries. Of those injured, NBC News reports, five were confirmed to have been hospitalized, including one person with serious injuries. Two others were treated at the scene.

According to Cook, the shooter also died, seemingly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.

CBS News reports that shortly after 11 pm EST, police responded to reports of an active shooter at a FedEx facility near the Indianapolis airport.

One employee at the facility recalled in an interview on the TODAY Show the moment he realized there was a shooter on the premises.

Initially believing the sound of gunfire was a backfiring car engine, the employee, Levi Miller, who was eating with several other employees outside of the facility at the time of the shooting, stood up from the bench he was sitting on and saw a hooded man holding a riffle.

“And when I stand up, I see a man — a hooded figure — I was unable to see his face in detail.” Miller then shared that he saw the hooded man carrying what appeared to be an “AR” or rifle. The shooter, he said, then “started shouting, and then he started firing in random directions … I thought he saw me, and so I immediately ducked for cover.”

Miller also claimed that the employees he was outside with witnessed another man, not previously involved in the shooting, try to engage in gunfire with the shooter. That man, Miller said, died. These claims have yet to be confirmed by police.

Early Friday morning, FedEx released a statement to Twitter noting that they were “deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Group facility in Indianapolis.”

The statement continued, “Our heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. The safety of our team members is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities.”

Indianapolis Major Joe Hogsett offered prayers to the victim’s families in a statement shared on Twitter Friday morning.

“As law enforcement works to learn more about this tragedy, our prayers are with the families of those whose lives were cut short,” Hogsett wrote. “Thank you to all of our city’s first responders for their tireless work overnight. Their quick response provided critical aid to those injured in the shooting and brought a measure of calm to an otherwise chaotic scene,” he added.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident. At the time of this writing, neither the shooter’s name nor his motive has been released.
