Rep. Dan Crenshaw Makes First Public Appearance despite Blindness after Eye Surgery
Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw of Texas made his first public appearance last Thursday despite being blind from an eye surgery earlier this month.
Earlier this month, as Christian Headlines previously reported, Crenshaw underwent emergency surgery after doctors discovered that the retina in his left eye was detaching.
“A few days ago, I noticed some dark, blurry spots in my vision. I went to get this checked out by an ophthalmologist on Thursday, and they discovered that my retina was detaching,” he said in a press release at the time. “This is a terrifying prognosis for someone with one eye and the nature of the injuries I sustained in Afghanistan.”
Crenshaw, a retired NAVY Seal, had also lost his right eye from an IED (improvised explosive device) that detonated during his deployment in Afghanistan in 2012, CBN News reports.
His left eye, while badly damaged from the blast, recovered. Crenshaw did two more deployments before medically retiring in 2016.
On Thursday, the Congressman joined the House Energy and Commerce meeting as he spoke to his colleagues virtually. Crenshaw, who was still blind from the surgery, stated that he should be back to normal in a couple of months.
“It’s good to be back with y’all… still can’t see y’all! Don’t need to feel bad for me,” he said. “We raise our right hand and then we ask to go to war, and sometimes this is what happens.”
Crenshaw also offered an update on his Twitter account last week concerning his condition.

“Still can’t see yet very well,” he explained. “Still got some pain and inflammation you can see that, pretty red eye, but doctors are optimistic, been doing various follow up appts by now and the retina is staying in place which means we’re hopeful I’ll return to some sense of normalcy in the next couple of months.”
