Congressional Republicans May Remove Rep. Liz Cheney from High-Ranking GOP Seat

Congressional Republicans may be trying to oust Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney from her top GOP seat.

According to CBN News, Cheney serves as the House Republican Conference chairwoman, placing her in the third-highest position in House Republican leadership.

Cheney was also one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump following the riot at Capitol Hill in January.

This week, Cheney tweeted a response to a statement from Trump where he critiqued President Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

“The 2020 presidential election was not stolen,” she said in a tweet. “Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said some are working to remove Cheney from the role because of her “ability” and not because of her past vote on Trump.

“I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message,” McCarthy said.

In another conversation, an open microphone recorded McCarthy saying, “I think she’s got real problems… I’ve had it with… I’ve had it with her. You know, I’ve lost confidence.”

A vote on Cheney’s position could come as early as next week.

Experts say Cheney could be replaced by New York Rep. Elise Stefanik. In 2019, she was one of only eight Republicans to support the Equality Act, which Christian leaders and groups have vocally opposed. She switched her vote this year, but the issue is still significant and could impact the future of the GOP.

The Equality Act amends the 1964 Civil Rights Act and bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, employment, federal programs and public accommodations. Under the act, religious freedom cannot be used as a challenge to the law’s protections.

“House Republicans need to be solely focused on taking back the House in 2022 and fighting against Speaker Pelosi and President Biden’s radical socialist agenda, and Elise Stefanik is strongly committed to doing that, which is why Whip (Steve) Scalise has pledged to support her for Conference Chair,” his spokeswoman said.
