Former NFL Player Saves Man Whose Truck Was Hit by a Train: ‘The Lord Wanted Him Alive’
On Thursday, former NFL defensive end Brandon Bair raced to the rescue of a man stuck in a burning semi-truck after it was hit by a train in Idaho.
According to CBN News, Bair said that he was driving on Highway 20 in St. Anthony, Idaho, on Thursday when he saw a train plow into a semi-truck, resulting in an intense blast. Bair said he was driven to act after hearing a voice from inside the vehicle, which caught fire after the collision.
Bair rushed across the highway as the conductors exited the train. The air was thick with smoke, and fire covered the front of the train and the semi.
“I was on Highway 20 driving to my business when I saw the train hit the truck. There was an explosion right away, and the train was pushing the truck down the tracks,” Bair told EastIdahoNews.com.
Bair told the newspaper that he immediately decided to go into the truck to get the driver, Steven Jenson, out of the vehicle.
“We walked away, and within seconds, the fire on the roof fell down inside, and the whole seat and cab went up in flames. A few minutes later, there were a couple big booms and explosions,” Bair said.
Bair waited with Jenson’s until rescue personnel arrived. Afterward, he met with the police and gave a statement, then climbed into his truck and drove home, calling his wife to tell her what happened. Getting Jenson out of the car took Bair less than three minutes.
Bair told police that at least two teens and others came to assist after the accident.
Jensen reportedly is in stable condition at a local hospital, according to ESPN. And the crash is currently being investigated by the Idaho State Police.
“All I can say is this guy was supposed to live. I’m a man of faith, and I’ve learned to listen to your gut and the promptings you get,” Bair said in an interview.
“The Lord wanted him alive. Things could have gone different, a million different directions, but things worked out on his behalf. That’s my conclusion. Whether it was me or someone else, he was supposed to live.”
