Rockstar Alice Cooper Says God Has Been Instrumental in Helping Him Maintain His Sobriety

In a recent interview with Page Six, Rockstar Alice Cooper opened up about how his relationship with God has been instrumental in keeping him sober.

Cooper, who is known for his dark, horror movie-like aesthetic, told the outlet that at the height of his career, no one knew the extent of his drinking problem, though he was drinking “a case of beer a day at least.”

Cooper, who is known for his dark, horror movie-like aesthetic, told the outlet that at the height of his career, no one knew the extent of his drinking problem, though he was drinking “a case of beer a day at least.”

“Internally my pancreas and liver were being destroyed,” Cooper, who has been married to his wife Sheryl Goddard since 1976, said. “I woke up one morning and I threw up blood and that’s how I kind of knew it was over. My wife grabbed my ear and said, ‘Hey, the party’s over,’” he recalled.

Following this incident, Cooper went to the hospital to receive treatment through rehab for his alcoholism.

“When I came out, I never had a craving for alcohol again,” Cooper told Page Six.

“I never went to AA. Everyone said, ‘Oh you have such great willpower,’ I said, ‘No, God has great willpower. He took it from me,’” Cooper asserted.

The Rockstar added that his father, grandfather and father-in-law, all of whom are pastors, were praying for his recovery.

“Even the doctor said, ‘This is an absolute miracle.’ I said, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘Well, you should be hiding bottles all over the house and you should be sneaking drugs.’ I said, ‘I have absolutely no desire for that at all.’”

Later in the interview, Cooper touched on his father’s thoughts on his dark theatrical style, asserting that despite being a pastor, his dad had no issue with his aesthetic.

Cooper said, “My dad knew my sense of humor, my dad was very cool. He loved rock and roll. He said, ‘I love the music, I can’t abide the lifestyle.’ He said, ‘I know the character you’re playing. He’s comical. He’s a villain but at the same time, he’ll slip on a banana peel.’”

Cooper added, “It took a while for people to understand that I was playing a character named Alice Cooper, I wasn’t Alice Cooper, I was playing that character. It was like a dark vaudeville.”

The “School’s Out” singer famously staged “elaborate, horror-inspired” shows that often featured dark makeup and costumes and sometimes even real snakes.

The now 73-year-old rocker is still active in the music industry. Page Six reports that Cooper partnered with Cooper Tire in the “Drive to Perform” contest. The contest sought to find the most talented garage band in the country. The band South of Eden won the content, and as a prize, the group will be opening for rock band Evanescence in a livestream concert on May 13.
