How Communist China Uses Big Tech To Aid Its Oppressive Surveillance State

On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, reporter and author Geoffrey Cain joins Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to discuss his book “The Perfect Police State: An Undercover Odyssey into China’s Terrifying Surveillance Dystopia of the Future” and how the communist government in China is using American technology to oppress people and Uighurs in Xinjiang.

“I don’t just want to focus on Chinese technology giants because numerous American firms do have some complacency in building this system, even if they were not directly involved in this sinister way and it’s selling the technology to the Chinese surveillance state,” Cain said.

This technology is then used to ensure that anyone who opposes the regime is locked away in camps and no longer has a voice, a tactic which Cain said is concerning.

“They essentially said ‘you’re a bunch of terrorists and we’re going to round you up. We’re going to beat you with rifle butts. We’re going to send you to jail.’ And then this began expanding over time and this is what happened in the last decade. This security state, this technological surveillance state just began expanding against the leaders to the point where it got out of control,” Cain said.

“I see it as a warning of what happens when state power just simply has no check against it,” he added.
