Dominic Raab removed as Foreign Secretary, confirmed as Justice Secretary, Lord Chancellor and Deputy Prime Minister

Former Foreign Minister Dominic Raab has been appointed Justice Secretary by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Raab’s reappointment comes amid a hectic day of reshuffling by the PM.

Raab was the first minister reappointed after a round of sackings earlier in the afternoon that saw Education Secretary Gavin Williamson, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland, and Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick all relieved of their positions.

Raab had taken criticism in parliament over British intelligence’s failure to foresee the rapid collapse of the western-backed government in Afghanistan last month and the lightning-fast fall of Kabul to Taliban forces. However, several pundits reported that Johnson was keen not to appear to be demoting Raab over the Afghanistan debacle, and awarded him the position of Deputy Prime Minister to emphasize his experience of a lawyer – a move that could be perceived as softening the blow of his reassignment.
