The Chosen Christmas Film Smashes All-Time Fathom Record with $8 Million in Ticket Sales

The viral Bible-based series The Chosen broke another record for its new theatrical film on Thursday when it became the best-selling movie in the history of Fathom Events, its distributor.

Christmas With the Chosen: The Messengers topped $8 million in sales based on 640,000 tickets sold – both records for a company that was founded 17 years ago in 2004 and distributes new films, classic films, sports, concerts and performing arts to movie theaters. Fathom is the 11th largest distributor to movie theaters and is a joint venture between AMC, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark.

Christmas With the Chosen previously broke the Fathom record for out-of-the-gate ticket sales during the first 12 hours.

The film was originally slated for only two nights. But once ticket sales soared, it expanded to 10 nights and now will play through Dec. 10.

It is being released in 1,700 movie theaters.

“We knew we had something special with this title,” Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events, said in a news release. “We are grateful for the passionate fans of The Chosen and our exhibitor partners who accommodated demand by adding showtimes and locations. We are all partners on this journey to claim the #1 spot as Fathom’s best-selling event, ever!”

The film includes a new Nativity-centric episode of The Chosen but also music by multiple artists, including Phil Wickham, For King and Country, Maverick City Music, Cain, Brandon Lake, Jordan Feliz, We the Kingdom and Matt Maher. It also features three actors from the popular series: Luke Dimyan (Judas), Giavani Cairo (Thaddeus) and Lara Silva (Eden).

“We don’t do this for the numbers, but these records indicate people will indeed go to the theater for a project they’re passionate about,” said Dallas Jenkins, the creator, writer and director of The Chosen. “The enthusiastic comments from new and old fans give us the confidence to do this again.”
