Biden Sanctions Belarus Over Illegal Migrants to E.U. AS MILLIONS CROSS OUR U.S. SOUTHERN BORDER

The Biden administration is imposing sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko’s regime in Belarus for allowing illegal migrants to flood its borders and into the European Union even as America’s porous southern border leaks upwards of a million illegal migrants into U.S. territory.

The United States on Wednesday joined the E.U., the United Kingdom and Canada in the sanctions on people and entities close to the Belarusian strongman who have all aided the channelling of migrants to the bloc’s borders.

In a joint statement, they said the sanctions were in response to “continuing attacks on human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus, disregard for international norms and repeated acts of repression.”

The Lukashenko regime has drawn migrants to Belarus with promises of easy migration to Europe even as E.U. states accuse the regime of encouraging or forcing those migrant groups to rush the border with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia for onward travel into Europe, AFP reports. —>READ MORE HERE

US and allies impose new sanctions on Belarus over migrant crisis and ongoing human rights abuses:

The United States joined with international allies to impose new sanctions on Belarus Thursday in response to the migrant crisis on the border with Poland and the political repression and ongoing human rights violations committed by the Lukashenko regime.

The US, United Kingdom, European Union, and Canada took coordinated action against a number of Belarusian entities and individuals in their latest effort to put pressure on Belarus’s longtime strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko, who has been accused of using “innocent migrants as a political weapon, as an effort at destabilization,” in the words of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and whose government has carried out a campaign of repression against activists, dissidents and journalists.

“We remain committed to supporting the democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus and stand together to impose costs on the regime — and those who support it — for its efforts to silence the voices of independent civil society, media, and all Belarusians seeking to speak the truth about what is happening in their country,” the four nations said in a joint statement.

The sanctions also come at a time of heightened tension between Moscow — the Lukashenko regime’s strongest backer — and much of the West as Russian President Vladimir Putin amasses troops on the border with Ukraine. —>READ MORE HERE
