God ‘Has Plenty of Good Reasons for Everything He Does,’ Tim Keller Says in Cancer Update

Noted theologian, author, and founding pastor of New York City’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church credited God for sustaining him as he continues to battle pancreatic cancer.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, Keller first broke the news of his diagnosis in June 2020. Since then, he has posted periodic updates on social media.

His latest post offered an encouraging message, ChurchLeaders.com reports.

“I have Stage IV pancreatic cancer. But it is endlessly comforting to have a God who is both infinitely more wise and more loving than I am,” Keller wrote on Twitter last Friday. “He has plenty of good reasons for everything he does and allows that I cannot know, and therein is my hope and strength.”

While he appreciates the outpouring of prayers, Keller explained that the post was ultimately intended to glorify God amid his condition.

“I deeply appreciate prayer for my situation! But my main purpose in the last post was to show that having a God who in some ways is beyond our comprehension (especially regarding evil and suffering) is more of a spiritual strength than it is an intellectual problem,” he added.

Keller’s initial post received over 46,000 likes and over 2,000 replies. Most of the replies were prayers for him.

“Our brother Tim, this glorifies God! Stand firm in the Lord and the power of His might. Fight on our brother,” Southern Baptist Convention President Ed Litton wrote in response to Keller’s tweet.

Dr. Russell Moore, director of the Public Theology Project at Christianity Today and former president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission at the Southern Baptist Convention, called on his followers to pray for Keller.

“This man means the world to a *lot* of us. Would you stop and pray for him right now?” Moore wrote.
