Schumer Says Dems Believe voting Reform Needed to Win Elections; Biden to Lobby Senate Dems in Person on Gutting Filibuster for Partisan Rewrite of U.S. Voting Laws; Says Filibuster Must Be Nuked So Nancy Pelosi Can Run America’s Elections
Schumer says Democrats believe voting reform needed to win elections:
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday his Democratic colleagues are telling him they are concerned they will not be able to win elections in the future if Congress does not pass the Democrats’ voting reform bills.
In an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, he said Senate Democrats have been aggressively lobbying Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema to support making adjustments to the filibuster rules to get it done.
“Just about every senator — every single one of the 50 is talking individually to Joe Manchin, to Kyrsten Sinema, and they’re saying things like, ‘I’ll lose my election if the legislature is allowed to do this in my state. We’ll lose our majority, but more importantly, we’ll lose our democracy,’” Schumer said. —>READ MORE HERE
Biden to lobby Senate Dems in person on gutting filibuster for partisan rewrite of U.S. voting laws:
President Biden will journey to Capitol Hill on Thursday to implore Senate Democrats to blow up the filibuster and ram through a partisan rewrite of the nation’s voting laws.
Mr. Biden is set to address the Senate Democratic conference during a special lunch session. The president is expected to urge lawmakers to stand united behind blowing up the chamber’s 60-vote filibuster threshold, arguing that participatory democracy itself is at stake.
“This is a defining moment that will divide everything before and everything after,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki. “The most fundamental American right that all others flow from — the right to vote and have your vote counted — is at risk.”
Mr. Biden’s remarks to Senate Democrats are likely to be a reprise of the arguments he made earlier this week during a speech in Atlanta.
“I believe that the threat to our democracy is so grave that we must find a way to pass these voting rights bills, debate them, vote,” Mr. Biden said. “Let the majority prevail. And if that bare minimum is blocked, we have no option but to change the Senate rules, including getting rid of the filibuster for this.” —>READ MORE HERE
Biden Says Filibuster Must Be Nuked So Nancy Pelosi Can Run America’s Elections:
President Joe Biden demanded the destruction of the Senate filibuster in Atlanta on Tuesday for the sake of passing Democrats’ federal takeover of elections.
“I’ve been having these quiet conversations with members of Congress for the last two months. I’m tired of being quiet,” screeched the commander-in-chief, pounding his hand on the lectern. The president did not call for the total elimination of the Senate rule allowing the minority to block legislation short of 60 votes, but urged Senate Democrats to amend the minority lever with an exception afforded to the party’s “voting rights” bill.
Biden cloaked his calls for change in the upper chamber under the umbrella of civil rights, claiming Republicans have sought to strip voting rights by virtue of primarily voter ID laws. No American citizen, however, has been fundamentally disenfranchised by a single law passed by Republicans to enhance election integrity.
“As an institutionalist, I believe that the threat to our democracy is so grave that we must find a way to pass these voting rights bills,” Biden said at a consortium of historically black colleges in reference to a series of packaged reforms by Democrats to federalize elections ahead of a hostile midterm cycle. Biden called on the Democrats’ 50-50 “majority [to] prevail” in the passage of broad radical legislation with the Democrats’ upper hand only secured through a tie-breaking vote by the vice president. —>READ MORE HERE
