Trump’s New Social Media Platform, Truth Social, Tops Free App List in Apple’s App Store
After being permanently banned from Facebook and Twitter last year, former President Trump officially launched his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday.
According to the platform’s website, Truth Social is described as “America’s ‘Big Tent,’ a social media platform that encourages an open, free, and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideology.”
Due to the high volume of people downloading the app, some incoming users could not create an account and were added to a waitlist. As reported by CBN News, about 200,000 people were reportedly placed on the waitlist.
Reuters reports that the platform is led by former Republican U.S. Representative Devin Nunes of Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG).
“This week, we will begin to roll out on the Apple App Store. That’s going to be awesome because we’re going to get so many more people that are going to be on the platform,” Nunes told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on her show on Sunday.
“Our goal is, I think we’re going to hit it, I think by the end of March, we’re going to be fully operational at least within the United States,” he continued.
Truth Social is expected to include a video-on-demand service titled TMTG+ that will feature entertainment programming, news and podcasts.
The creation of the platform comes as big tech outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have censored dissenting voices, causing people to flock to other social media platforms like Parler, GETTR, and Rumble – an alternative to YouTube.
“I created Truth Social and TMTG to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced,” Trump said in a statement last year.
“This is unacceptable. I am excited to send out my first Truth on Truth Social very soon. TMTG was founded with a mission to give a voice to all,” he added. “I’m excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on Truth Social and to fight back against Big Tech. Everyone asks me why doesn’t someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!”
The app, which launched on Sunday, is topping Apple’s free app list as of Monday morning.
