Israel Expected to Vote in Support of UN Resolution Condemning Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

Israel is expected to vote in support of the United Nations General Assembly resolution that condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said this week.

Lapid said Israel “will join and vote in favor, along with the overwhelming majority of nations.”

“Israel was and will be on the right side of history,” he said in a statement on Monday. “We have a moral duty and historical obligation to be part of the effort.”

The General Assembly resolution is expected to pass in the United Nations group.

“Russia is the most significant military force in Syria, and our mechanism of cooperation with them is aiding our determined struggle against the establishment of an Iranian (presence) on our northern border,” Lapid said.

About 4,000 Israelis have left Ukraine in the last few days since Russian forces moved into the country, but thousands still are in the country, Lapid said. He added that about 180,000 people are entitled to Israeli citizenship if they choose to flee to Israel, the Times of Israel reports.

“Ukraine is a difficult battle zone, but we are committed to a sacred principle – we will do everything not to leave any Israeli behind, any Jew behind. This is the reason the Jewish state exists. This is our commitment.”

Humanitarian aid is expected to be delivered in airlifts this week, dropping thousands of coats, blankets, sleeping bags, medical supplies, tents and water purification equipment into Ukraine.

Last week, Jerusalem rejected co-sponsoring a similar resolution to the U.N. – this one was for the Security Council. Lapid said he understood that Jerusalem needed to be “careful and discretionary” in its relations with Moscow because of Russian forces in Syria that work with Israel.

A Jerusalem official said the decision to not co-sponsor the original Security Council resolution came because of a concern that Russia holds veto power and would kill the measure anyway.
