90 Percent of Americans Oppose Sex-Change Surgeries for Minors, but Many Are too Afraid to Speak Up, Poll Finds
According to a new national poll, nearly all Americans believe underage minors should not be permitted to undergo sex-change surgeries, but many are too afraid to speak up about it.
The poll, which was conducted by Summit Ministries in collaboration with McLaughlin & Associates, asked American voters to give their opinions on transgenderism and sex and gender-based curriculum being taught in elementary schools.
When asked whether underage minors should be “encouraged” to undergo “permanent gender alteration,” 90 percent of Americans said they should wait until they are a legal adult to undergo such operations. Just 10 percent of Americans said that minors should be encouraged to undergo permanent gender alterations.
An overwhelming majority (90 percent) also believed that medical professionals should be required by law to disclose the common and long-term medical and psychological side-effects of gender-altering procedures. Ten percent said they should not be required.
Another vast majority (93 percent) of American voters believe that “it is possible to distinguish between men and women,” while seven percent said it is not possible to distinguish between the two genders.
The survey also found that nearly two-thirds of Americans (64 percent) do not believe transgenderism is “a healthy human condition,” while 36 percent said it is a healthy condition. When asked if they would be willing to speak up for their beliefs regarding transgenderism, 34 percent of respondents said they believe it is unhealthy but are not willing to speak up out of fear of offending others, while 30 percent of respondents agreed that it is unhealthy but said they were willing to speak out.
Regarding sexual-based curriculum in elementary schools, almost three-fourths of American voters opposed the teaching of “sexual identity and sexual behavior” for elementary-age children. Among those who opposed such curricula, 42 percent said it is “inappropriate in a school setting,” and 30 percent said it is “dangerous and could lead to children being groomed for sexual encounters at a young age.”
Nearly 3-in-10 Americans (28 percent), however, believe that the sexual-based curriculum “is a perfectly appropriate use of instruction time.”
“Everywhere Americans look, the media and education culture is bombarding us with relentless, daily messages in support of transgenderism without limits. Despite this intensity, these stunning numbers show plainly that the vast majority of Americans aren’t buying what they’re being sold. A huge majority of Americans – for example – don’t think this issue belongs anywhere near our kids,” Dr. Jeff Myers, President of Summit.org, said in a statement.
“Yet, we also see a powerful chilling effect that this propaganda is having on society, as this research shows that tens and tens of millions disagree with what they see, but are afraid to say anything about their views. We trust this poll will spark all-important conversations so we can properly address these issues as a nation.”
The polling survey was conducted online from April 22nd through April 26th with a national representative sample of 1,000 likely election voters.
