Pastor Daniel Dickard Defeats Voddie Baucham in SBC Pastor’s Conference Presidential Race
Popular Preacher and author Dr. Voddie Baucham lost his bid to become the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Pastor’s Conference to North Carolina Pastor Daniel Dickard.
On Monday, Dickard of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro was elected as the new Pastor’s Conference president. The Pastor’s Conference is a two-day event that generally occurs before the annual meetings.
According to the Tennessean, Dickard received 690 of the 1,357 ballots cast, while Baucham received 608 votes. Fifty-nine votes were rejected.
Dickard was nominated by Jordan Easley, the pastor of First Baptist Church Cleveland, Tennessee, the Alabama Baptist reports.
“He was born in an SBC church. He was raised and discipled by faithful men and women in SBC churches,” Easley explained. “His father is an SBC pastor. He was called to ministry in an SBC church.”
Dickard “believes like so many of us believe that the SBC Pastors’ Conference should highlight the best of what it means to be a Southern Baptist,” he continued. “But it should also be centered on our common mission and our shared cooperative effort.”
Baucham had been nominated by Founders Ministries, a conservative Baptist group in the SBC. Baucham is the current Dean of Theology at African Christian University in Zambia. He also serves on the Founders Ministries board.
Baucham, who is highly regarded among the more conservative wing of the SBC, has been an outspoken critic of Critical Race Theory, as highlighted in his latest book, Fault Lines: The Social Justice Movement and Evangelicalism’s Looming Catastrophe.
In their endorsement, Founders Ministries expressed concern that the SBC has gone adrift from its biblical convictions by embracing social justice and wokeness in recent years.
“The Southern Baptist Convention badly needs a change of direction. While baptisms and evangelism continue their freefall, a small group of leaders steers our institutions ever closer to the culture, from radical feminism masked as ‘soft complementarianism’ to the false gospel of Critical Theory and Intersectionality,” the conservative group explained, The Christian Post reports.
“In Christ, there is no Jew or Greek, there is no slave or free, we are all made one in Him. But this ‘Race Marxism’ divides everyone by their most superficial features, in a never-ending cycle of recrimination and hate,” the statement added. “We reject these worldly dogmas. We stand together on the Baptist Faith and Message. We proclaim the sufficiency of Scripture. And we know the vast majority of Southern Baptists do too.”
Founders Ministries also endorsed its president, Florida Pastor Tom Ascol of Grace Baptist Church, for the next SBC president. Ascol lost to Texas pastor Bart Barber Tuesday evening.
