John MacArthur Condemns California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Abortion Billboard Campaign in Open Letter
Pastor John MacArthur of the Los Angeles-based Grace Community Church sent an open letter to Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom condemning his recent pro-abortion billboard campaign that attempts to use Scripture to justify abortions.
MacArthur, who has led Grace Community Church for 53 years, began the letter by asserting that Newsom’s policies have led to a surge in homelessness, crime, homosexuality and transgenderism.
“I don’t need to itemize or elaborate on the many immoral decisions you have perpetrated against God and the people of our state, which have only exacerbated these problems,” MacArthur wrote. “Nevertheless, my goal in writing is not to contend with your politics, but rather to plead with you to hear and heed what the Word of God says to men in your position.”
He then addressed Newsom’s recent pro-abortion billboard campaign that saw pro-abortion signs erected in pro-life states that enacted abortion restrictions after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in June.
As Christian Headlines previously reported, the billboards partially quote Mark 12:31, which reads, “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.”
MacArthur contended that the billboard campaign shows the whole nation “how thoroughly rebellious” Newsom is against God by “promoting the slaughter of children, whom He creates in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16; Isaiah 45:9-12).”
The 83-year-old pastor also called Newsom out for misquoting Mark 12:31 and attempting to use it to endorse abortion. MacArthur further pointed out the importance of Mark 12:30, the verse that comes just before the one on the billboards. The verse reads, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Both verses are considered the Greatest Commandments in all of the Bible.
“You cannot love God as He commands while aiding in the murder of His image-bearers,” MacArthur wrote.
Towards the end of the open letter, MacArthur warned Newsom that his soul “lies, in grave eternal peril” and called him to repent and turn to Jesus Christ for salvation before it’s too late.
“Our church, and countless Christians nationwide, are praying for your full repentance. Please
respond to the gospel, forsake the path of wickedness you have pursued all your life, turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and use your office to advance the cause of righteousness (as is your duty) instead of undermining it (as has been your pattern),” MacArthur concluded.
In addition to the abortion billboard campaign, Newsom launched a $1 million website to promote California’s abortion services for California residents and out-of-staters.
On Tuesday, the Democratic governor signed a bill that would prevent coroners from holding an inquest after a fetal death “related to or following known or suspected self-induced or criminal abortion.”
As The Daily Wire reported, the measure would also make clear under the Reproductive Privacy Act that pregnancy loss from either miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, or perinatal death because of causes that took place in the uterus would not be criminalized.
