Abortion Is ‘Another Word for Mercy’ Says Actress Anne Hathaway
Actress Anne Hathaway said this week in an appearance on “The View” that abortion is “another word for mercy.”
“We don’t know,” she said. “We know that no two pregnancies are alike, and it follows that no two lives are alike; it follows that no two conceptions are alike.”
“So how can we have a law — how can we have a point of view on this — that says we must treat everything the same?” continued the actress. “When you allow for choice, you allow for flexibility, which is what we need in order to be human.”
Hathaway said she was speaking on her own “personal experience with abortion.”
Earlier this year, Hathaway posted on her Instagram account, referring to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The most recent Supreme Court ruling allows states to decide any restrictions on abortions. In her post celebrating the anniversary of her film “The Devil Wears Prada,” she wrote that the film “shaped the lives and careers of so many.”
“Mine included,” she wrote. “I am struck by the fact that the young female characters in this movie built their lives and careers in a country that honored their right to have choice over their own reproductive health.
“See you in the fight,” she wrote.
During her interview with “The View,” Hathaway wrote that the June 2006 movie was a perfect example of a young woman navigating the start of her career and the choices that come with that.
“I played a young woman who was starting out her career,” she said of the film, loosely based on a real-life assistant’s job with Vogue editor Anna Wintour. “And when you are a young woman starting out your career, your reproductive destiny matters a great deal. And I just — it had just happened and I just — I think about it all the time. I think we all think about it all the time, and what the implications are, and what it means to live in a country that puts us in this position.”
