Chris Pratt Breaks Political Silence, Endorses Democrat Rick Caruso for LA Mayor
Actor Chris Pratt posted on Instagram this week that he is officially endorsing Rick Caruso (D) for mayor of Los Angeles.
Previously, Pratt has refrained from endorsing political candidates, but this week, he said “there’s too much to lose” in LA for him to remain quiet.
“I’ve lived in LA for over 20 years,” Pratt said. “It’s been great to me. In that time, I’ve seen what many residents here have seen, the city’s gradual decline into pain and utter disarray.
“I don’t normally support political candidates, but in this election, there’s too much to lose. If you’re an LA voter, I urge you to vote for (Rick Caruso). He’s a builder … He’s the guy for our city. Rick Caruso for LA Mayor,” Pratt wrote in an Instagram story, according to the New York Post.
Caruso – a businessman – previously served as the commissioner of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and president of the Los Angeles Police Commission, Faithwire reports.
In previous years, Caruso has identified himself as a Republican and later as an Independent. He switched to Democrat just before announcing his candidacy for mayor.
Caruso’s opponent in the race is Democratic Rep. Karen Bass, who serves in the U.S. Congress.
In a Fox News editorial recently, Caruso wrote that he loved the city of LA, but the city is “not delivering the opportunities it should for residents.”
“Los Angeles is in a state of emergency with homelessness on the rise and people not feeling safe to take mass transit to work, have their children walk to school or walk around the block,” Caruso said. “The root cause is that the system in Los Angeles is broken, and the interests of Angelenos are being sacrificed by career politicians.”
Pratt’s mother-in-law, Maria Shriver, also posted on social media that she was endorsing Caruso.
“This race is super tight, and every vote matters. If you want Los Angeles to be different than it is today, the choice is clear with @RickCarusoLA. Change is critical to the city’s future. It’s up to us – let’s go,” she tweeted.
