At Least 4,000 Christians Killed, 2,300 Abducted in Nigeria in 2022

Islamic jihadist groups in Nigeria have killed at least 4,000 Christians and abducted more than 2,300 other Christians so far in 2022, according to a recently released report from the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law.

According to The Christian Post, between January and October, Fulani herdsmen and Islamic terror groups linked to the Fulani group were responsible for 2,650 of the 4,000 Christian deaths.

Other terror groups, such as Boko Haram, the Islamic State in West Africa Province and Ansaru, were responsible for 450 of the 4,000 Christian deaths in Nigeria. Meanwhile, other Fulani bandits and groups were responsible for 370 Christian deaths.

Fulani herdsmen and Fulani bandits are said to have abducted more than 2,315 Christians.

It is estimated that about 10 percent of those abducted Christians have either “most likely been killed in captivity for their refusal to convert to Islam” or killed because of an “inability to pay huge ransoms demanded,” the report said.

The recent report comes just after the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom said religious freedom rights in Nigeria were under threat because of increased violence.

“In recent years, nonstate actor violence has increased in most parts of Nigeria, and this violence has yielded devastating humanitarian and human rights consequences, including but not limited to violence based on religion and other violations of Nigerians’ rights to freedom of religion or belief,” USCIRF wrote in a report breaking down violence in the African nation.

“Violence that infringes on freedom of religion or belief in Nigeria includes militant Islamist violence, identity-based violence at the intersection of religion, ethnicity, and geographic heritage, mob violence against individuals accused of blasphemy, and violence impacting worship,” the congressionally mandated commission made up of independent experts charged with advising the federal government on issues of religious freedom, said.

Experts have said that in the past two decades in Nigeria, at least 60,000 Christians have been killed in the country.
