Lysa TerKeurst Opens Up about Life after Ending Her 29-Year Marriage

Best-selling Christian author and Proverbs 31 Ministries founder Lysa TerKeurst recently reflected on her life nearly a year after her marriage of 29 years ended due to her husband’s infidelity.

“Two years of healing. Two years of focusing on my own health,” she wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, along with a selfie. “Two years of learning how to sit in the quiet with myself and be okay. Two years of believing God for goodness, even when things felt not good at all. Two years of learning to go home to an empty house and counting the blessings that are still abundant.

“Two years … and I’m good. Better than good. I’m honestly surprised by how far I’ve come and how honest my laughter is now. My life looks different, but it is full and joyful, and I’m more grateful than I’ve ever been,” she concluded.

In January, TerKeurst announced that she and her husband, Art, would be divorcing after 29 years of marriage because he had “chosen patterns of behavior that dishonor God and the biblical covenant of marriage.”

TerKeurst and her husband first considered divorce in 2017 due to her husband’s infidelity and issues with addiction, but the couple decided to stick it out and even renewed their wedding vows in 2018.

Despite their attempt to save the marriage, they eventually would file for divorce in 2022.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, court filings show that Art spent over $100,000 on an “illicit sexual” extramarital affair with a woman he met online. In February, he filed a response to the divorce petition and requested post-separation support, alimony, an equitable division of property, damages and the rescission of a post-nuptial agreement.

Last month, TerKeurst released her latest book, Good Boundaries and Goodbyes, in which she shares the lessons she’s learned about when to biblically end a relationship.

“The main reason I wrote this book, or any book I write, is that I need to learn the lesson most of all. I knew I needed to learn a lot about boundaries,” she told Publishers Weekly. “I finally was able to accept that what was before me was an unsustainable relationship.”

TerKeurst, a mother of five and grandmother of three, has authored numerous New York Times bestsellers, including It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way and Forgiving What You Can’t Forget.
