‘By the Grace of God, I Stand Here’: Angela Bassett Wins Golden Globe Award for Performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Actress Angela Bassett gave glory to God on Tuesday night after winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

After she accepted the award, Bassett quoted the late American novelist Toni Morrison who once said, “Your life is already a miracle of chance just waiting for you to order its destiny.”

“But in order for that destiny to manifest, I think that it requires courage to have faith, it requires patience, as we just heard, and it requires a true sense of yourself,” Bassett said.

“It’s not easy because the past is circuitous, and it has many unexpected detours, but by the grace of God, I stand here,” she added. “I stand here grateful, grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for giving me this honor, along with Wakanda Forever. … My mother always said, ‘good things come to those who pray.’ I see the truth of that every day as we welcome each new day as a family.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiered in theaters last November. It is the sequel to the 2018 Black Panther film. The latest Marvel Studios film also pays tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman – who played Black Panther – who passed away from colon cancer in August 2020.

Bassett, who played the role of Queen Ramonda, commended her fellow co-stars Tuesday night and honored Boseman, The Christian Post reports

“To my Marvel Disney family, Ryan Coogler, Victoria Alonzo and Nate Moore, the cast and the crew, weeping may come in the evening, but joy comes in the morning,” she said. “We embarked on this journey together with love, we mourned, we loved, we healed, and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman.”

Bassett, 65, previously won a Golden Globe in 1994 for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for playing the iconic singer Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It. Tuesday’s win marks the first time an actress won a Golden Globe for a Marvel film.

As reported by The Christian Post, Bassett is an outspoken Christian and has often shared how her faith has impacted her career. Bassett has also shared that she turns to Scripture for support in tough times.

Quoting Romans 8:28, Bassett said, “All things work together for good, for those who have the Lord and are called according to His purpose.”

She continued, “So, I have foundations, and He is my rock I keep going back to.”
