Nikki Haley Announces Run for President, Becomes First Trump Challenger
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced on Monday that she is running for president in 2024, making her the second person after former president Donald Trump to enter the race.
The announcement was made in a video titled “Strong & Proud,” posted to her Twitter account.

“Get excited! Time for a new generation,” Haley wrote. “Let’s do this!”
As reported by ABC News, Haley is the first Republican to challenge Trump for the GOP Nomination. Last November, Trump announced he would again be running for president.
The video highlights Haley’s upbringing as a South Asian woman with parents of Indian descent.
Throughout the video, photos, including one of The 1619 Project and one of a sign reading, “RACISM IS A PANDEMIC,” are shown to illustrate how divisive the topic of race has been over the years. Haley, however, recalled her mother telling her to focus on the similarities people have because of their ethnicities, not their differences.
“My mom would always say your job is not to focus on the differences but the similarities. And my parents reminded me and my siblings every day how blessed we were to live in America,” Haley, a former UN ambassador, said.
“Some look at our past as evidence that America’s founding principles are bad,” she continued. “They say the promise of freedom is just made up. Some think our ideas are not just wrong, but racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
She went on to cite her credentials as a former governor of the Palmetto state and called for a change in the Republican party.
“Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections, that has to change … It’s time for a new generation of leadership.”
Haley concluded the video by asserting that she is ready to fight back.
“You should know this about me – I don’t put up with bullies. And when you kick back, it hurts them more if you are wearing heels.”
