Jesus Revolution Passes $50 Million, Sets April 11 for Home Video Release
The hit faith-based movie Jesus Revolution, which passed $50 million at the box office over the weekend, will release on digital home video on April 11 and then on DVD/Blu-ray two weeks later, the studio behind the film announced Tuesday.
Jesus Revolution (PG-13) passed the $50 million mark on Friday and finished No. 10 for the weekend. Since its theatrical release on February 24, the film has grossed $51 million.
“It’s just an unbelievable landmark for any movie,” co-director Jon Erwin said.
It debuted at No. 3 at the box office and stayed in the Top 10 for six straight weekends. The DVD/Blu-ray will launch on April 25. Special features on the DVD/Blu-ray will include audio commentary with co-directors Erwin and Brent McCorkle and producer Kevin Downes; deleted scenes; and special videos, including behind-the-scenes moments.
Erwin credited the film’s success to “the providence of God’s timing.” The film tells the true story of a hippie-led revival of the 60s/70s.
“When you think about the Asbury revivals and The Chosen and Super Bowl [He Gets Us] commercials and all these things,” Erwin said, listing a series of faith-centric events that helped boost the film. Erwin made the comments during a Zoom “prayer call” with the film’s cast and crew.
“The right story can change people’s lives if you tell it well,” Erwin said. “… My hope is that all the chatter about revival will continue.”
The Christian community, he said, has “once again shocked the system and shocked the industry and proven that we are an enormous underserved and hungry audience for content.”
Erwin further celebrated the success of other faith films, including Angel Studios’ His Only Son finishing No. 3 at the box office. He noted that another faith-centric film, Big George Foreman, is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 28.
“A rising tide does indeed lift all boats,” he said.
When faith movies succeed at the box office, Erwin added, “it allows us to do more movies.”
