Mohler Recovering at Home after Blood Clots Diagnosis: ‘I Am Thankful Beyond Words’
Theologian and seminary president Albert Mohler is out of the hospital and recovering at home after he faced a major medical situation that prevented him from breathing.
Mohler on Wednesday released a statement providing details about the hospital admission, which involved a diagnosis of bilateral pulmonary emboli (blood clots in both lungs) and a source clot in a leg. He is the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and a popular author and podcaster.
“I am so thankful to so many who have been praying for me and have offered massive encouragement in recent days,” Mohler said. “God has been so gracious to me in preserving me and giving strength. Last Friday night I experienced a very serious blot clot which went to my right lung and was preventing me from breathing. At the hospital, pulmonary emboli were identified in both lungs, with a major source clot in one of my legs.”
Medical treatment “was begun immediately,” Mohler said.
“Most importantly, tests revealed that I carry a genetic factor that massively increases the likelihood of dangerous clots and emboli,” Mohler said. “That is helpful knowledge. I am thankful that there are treatments and medicines that can prevent or mitigate such dangerous clots in the future. I can assure you that I am fully cooperating with medical advice.”
The experience, Mohler said, is “deeply humbling and results in profound gratitude.”
“Once again, I am thankful beyond words to Mary, whose love and devotion are legendary,” he said of his wife. “I love her so much and without her love and support (and direct care) I would not be writing these words. My sweet family has been so encouraging and loving, and there is no more effective therapy than three precious pajama-clad grandchildren staring into a phone to encourage Papa before they pray.”
Mohler’s doctors are optimistic about him returning to a regular schedule within a few days, he said.
“I want to acknowledge the excellent medical and support staff personnel of Baptist Health Louisville,” Mohler said. “Their professionalism and devotion were clear and their medical expertise was comforting and demonstrable. This is likely more information than most might want, but the bottom line is thankfulness to God and to each of you who have encouraged and prayed for me. I am more thankful than any statement can express.”
