Just like Louisiana. When the French came they built the first towns like New Orleans on rock/hard ground and built inland. They were not stupid.
Moron Americans drained the marshlands that sat between the higher inland areas and the ocean and those marshlands were natures way of slowing down hurricanes. After they drained the marshlands, homes were built on that soggy ground. Every year hurricanes slam directly into those homes with nothing to slow them down.
Worse, those homes are continuously SINKING every year little by little. The levees are built higher and higher but the homes keep sinking lower and lower. A levee can only be built so high up. Hurrican force winds / water break the levees and all the homes are flooded AGAIN year after year. People are idiots
