Jesus' Coming Back

Tim Keller’s Family Requests Prayer after He Returns to Hospital

The family of New York City pastor and author Tim Keller is requesting continued prayer for him after he was admitted back into the hospital Sunday, one day after being released.

Keller, who is battling stage four pancreatic cancer, has been in and out of the hospital in recent days, according to multiple posts by family members on his social media accounts. The latest update came from his son, Michael.

“A brief health update on my Dad: After being released from the hospital on Saturday, he returned late Sunday night to receive additional care. Please continue to pray for his recovery,” Michael Keller tweeted on Tuesday.

On May 13, his wife, Kathy, had said her husband was “out of the hospital and recovering at home after complications from his treatment.” She also asked for prayer for what she said would be a “slow recovery.”

In April, Keller himself had said he was “recovering from treatment for cancer down at the NIH.” He said it was going to be a “long and slow process back.”

Keller, 72, has used his social media accounts to reveal what his cancer diagnosis has taught him about God.

“I have Stage IV pancreatic cancer,” Keller tweeted last year. “But it is endlessly comforting to have a God who is both infinitely more wise and more loving than I am. He has plenty of good reasons for everything he does and allows that I cannot know, and therein is my hope and strength.

“… [H]aving a God who in some ways is beyond our comprehension (esp regarding evil and suffering) is more of a spiritual strength than it is an intellectual problem.”

Keller added, “Suffering awakens us out of our haunted sleep of spiritual self-sufficiency into a serious search for the divine.”

Keller retired as senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in 2017 to chair Redeemer City to City, a pastor-training program.
