Tina Turner, famously known as the “Queen of Rock’ n’ Roll,” has died. She was 83.
According to her manager, the iconic singer died peacefully on Wednesday in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, following a “long illness,” the Associated Press reports.
Born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner launched her career in the 1950s and would ultimately become known as the “Queen of Rock’ n’ Roll.”
In the 1980s, she won six of her eight Grammy awards and had a dozen songs in the Top 40.
Her most famous song, “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” was also used as the title for her 1993 biopic.
“How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world?” award-winning actress Angela Bassett, who played Turner in the 1993 biopic, said following the announcement of Turner’s death.
“Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like.”
Turner, whose music included a mix of pop, rock and R&B, inspired many of the world’s most prominent music artists, including the Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and pop superstars Beyoncé and Mariah Carey.
Jagger said in a statement on Twitter that he was saddened by Turner’s death, Reuters reports.
“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous,” Jagger wrote.
“She helped me so much when I was young, and I will never forget her,” he added.

Turner was a longtime Buddhist.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the singer credited her religious beliefs with helping her break away from her first husband, Ike Turner, in 1976 amid abuse. In 1986, she met German music executive Erwin Bach, whom she married in July 2013.
Turner is survived by Bach and two of Ike’s sons, whom she adopted.
