Chris Christie to Run for President in 2024
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has filed paperwork to officially enter the 2024 presidential race.
Christie joins a stacked GOP primary field. He has been openly critical of presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump.
“He undermined our democracy. And the only reason he undermined our democracy was because he was pissed,” Christie said of Trump’s repeated claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election and his attempts to overturn his loss, USA Today reports. “He undermined our democracy because he was angry we didn’t reelect him,” Christie added.
Christie, 60, supported Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections, but said he dropped his support after Trump claimed that the 2020 was “stolen.”
At a town hall this week in New Hampshire, Christie officially announced his campaign, targeting Trump, CNBC reports.
“A lonely, self-consumed, self-serving mirror hog is not a leader,” Christie said.
“The person I am talking about who is obsessed with the mirror, who never admits a mistake, who never admits a fault,” Christie then added, “is Donald Trump.”
Christie previously served as New Jersey’s 55th governor. He also worked as the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, an appointment by former President George W. Bush.
Christie was born in Newark, New Jersey and graduated from the University of Delaware and Seton Hall University School of Law.
“I’ll say to you tonight that I can’t guarantee you success in what I’m about to do. But I guarantee you that by the end of it you’ll have no doubt in your mind who I am and what I stand for and whether I deserve it,” Christie said.
In 2016, Christie launched an unsuccessful bid for president and dropped out of the race after coming in sixth in New Hampshire. His 2016 campaign slogan was, “Telling It Like It Is.”
“I tried to reinforce what I have always believed − that speaking your mind matters, that experience matters, that competence matters and that it will always matter in leading our nation,” Christie said at the time.
