Jinger Duggar Vuolo Shares Why She Didn’t Appear in Shiny Happy People Docuseries
Jinger Duggar Vuolo says that she refused to appear in the new Amazon docuseries Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets because she prefered to share her story in her own words.
“I was actually approached and asked to participate in the docuseries, but I thought that from my perspective, I really wanted to make sure that I was able to share my story in my own words and in my own timing,” Vuolo, 29, told PEOPLE magazine in an interview.
In January, Vuolo released her book, Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear, where she shares her story about how the Gospel helped her escape the controversial teachings of the Institute in Basic Life Principles led by disgraced pastor Bill Gothard. Vuolo’s family adhered to IBLP teachings throughout her childhood, ChurchLeaders.com reports.
“So that’s why I wrote Becoming Free Indeed, was to share more of my journey out of IBLP’s teachings,” Vuolo asserted. “I wanted to be able to share it in a way that was, like, God-honoring and hopefully sharing my story in a balanced way.”
Earlier this month, Amazon Prime released the 4-part docuseries about the Duggar family and the IBLP. Several former IBLP members were interviewed for the series, including Jill Duggar Dillard, the fourth of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children, and her husband, Derrick Dillard.
During the interview with PEOPLE, Vuolo said she spoke to Jill about the docuseries and respected her sister’s decision to participate in it.
“And I am excited to hear what she has to say, even in this documentary,” Vuolo shared.
As Christian Headlines previously reported, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar denounced the new docuseries, calling it “derogatory and sensationalized.”
“The recent ‘documentary’ that talks about our family is sad because, in it, we see the media and those with ill intentions hurting people we love. Like other families, ours too has experienced the joys and heartbreaks of life, just in a very public format,” the Duggars said in a statement.
“This ‘documentary’ paints so much and so many in a derogatory and sensationalized way because, sadly, that’s the direction of entertainment these days,” they concluded.
