Mike Pence Urges Republican Rivals to Endorse a 15-Week Federal Abortion Ban

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has challenged his Republican rivals for the presidential nomination to endorse a minimum 15-week federal abortion ban.

Pence threw down the challenge at a Faith & Freedom Coalition Policy annual conference in Washington, D.C., on June 23, 2023. It was timed just a day before the first anniversary of the historic overturning of Roe v Wade in the Supreme Court, which happened on June 24, 2022.

Religion News Service reported that Pence issued a call to action for his Republican colleagues to fully support a 15-week abortion ban.

“We must not rest, and we must not relent until we restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law in every state in this country. Every Republican candidate for president should support a ban on abortion before 15 weeks as a minimum nationwide standard,” Pence said.

Pence was joined at the 500-strong event by other presidential candidates, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and South Carolina’s Senator Tim Scott. All of the rivals stressed pro-life beliefs at the conference.

This is in sharp contrast to the mainstream view of Democrats. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took part in a rally not far from the Republican conference in D.C. The purpose of the rally was to rouse abortion rights supporters to support abortion despite the Supreme Court ruling a year ago.

Democrats plan to codify the right to have an abortion into federal law. Yet so far, they do not have enough backing in Congress to support such a maneuver.

“Since that dark June day last year, each one of you has worked tirelessly to fight back. You ain’t seen nothing yet,” Biden told the abortion activists.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump is being elusive about his stance on the federal abortion ban issue. He has previously blamed his party’s midterm performance on “the abortion issue.”
