IDF investigating if Israeli soldier was killed by friendly fire – report
IDF soldier St.-Sgt. David Yehuda Yitzhak was killed by gunfire amid clashes in the Jenin refugee camp on Tuesday evening, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit. The IDF is now investigating if he was killed by friendly fire, Israeli media outlets reported.
According to the IDF, the current information available suggests Yitzhak was killed during the withdrawal from Jenin, and it is possible he was hit by friendly fire.
Yitzhak, 23, was a resident of the Beit El settlement in the West Bank’s Binyamin region.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 5, at the IDF cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. His family has requested that there be no media coverage of the funeral.
Israeli officials eulogize the fallen IDF soldier who was killed in the Jenin operation
“On behalf of all the citizens of Israel, my wife Sara and I send our condolences from the bottom of our hearts to the family of the IDF soldier, St.-Sgt. David Yehuda Yitzhak, who was killed in the IDF operation in Jenin,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
“My heart and thoughts are with the family of the late St.-Sgt. David Yehuda Yitzhak,” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said in a statement, adding that he recognizes and appreciates “the commanders and troops of the IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) for their exemplary performance” in their operation to destroy terrorist infrastructure in Jenin.
The head of the Beit El local council, Shay Alon, issued a statement eulogizing Yitzhak.
“The residents of Beit El mourn the death of David Yehuda Yitzhak during operational activity in Jenin,” Alon said.
“[He was] an Egoz Unit soldier, the eldest son of Moshe and Emuna, and a brother to six brothers and sisters. Our hearts are with the heavy loss of his family upon learning the bitter news. ‘O nations, acclaim God’s people! For He’ll avenge the blood of His servants, wreak vengeance on His foes, and cleanse His people’s land.'”
