Sound of Freedom Upsets Disney’s Indiana Jones for No. 1 at the Box Office
A faith-focused movie released by Angel Studios beat Disney’s Indiana Jones at the box office on the Fourth of July.
Angel Studios’ Sound of Freedom grossed $14.2 million on its opening day on the Fourth of July holiday to claim the No. 1 spot at Tuesday’s box office, edging Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ($11.5 million). Although Dial of Destiny was the No. 1 film over the weekend, it could not hold off Sound of Freedom on the holiday.
Angel said Sound of Freedom grossed $11,563,260 directly through the box office and $2,678,803 through “pay-it-forward” tickets for a total of $14,242,063.

The film tells the true story of a government agent, Tim Ballard, who quit his job at the Department of Homeland Security so he could dedicate his life to rescuing children in other countries from sex trafficking. Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, Infidel) portrays Ballard. Mira Sorvino portrays his wife, Katherine.
“We’ve received numerous messages telling us theaters are either packed or sold out. This movie has now taken on a life of its own to become something more than that, a grassroots movement,” said Neal Harmon, CEO of Angel Studios. “… We’re going to see word-of-mouth spread even further going into the weekend. The world needs to see Sound of Freedom, and we know that our biggest competitive advantage – our incredible fans and investors – are going to make sure that happens.”
It received a rare A+ CinemaScore grade from moviegoers – the new Indiana Jones film, for example, got a B+ – and it also won high praise from mainstream critics. At Rotten Tomatoes, 85 percent of reviewers rated it “fresh.” That included Variety’s Owen Gleiberman, who described it as a “compelling movie that shines an authentic light on one of the crucial criminal horrors of our time, one that Hollywood has mostly shied away from.”
Harmon previously said the goal is to “fill the theatres opening week with 2 million people to represent the estimated 2 million children who will be trafficked this year.”
Sound of Freedom is rated PG-13 for thematic content involving sex trafficking, violence, language, sexual references, some drug references and smoking throughout.
