Sound of Freedom Climbs Back to No. 1, Beating Insidious and Indiana Jones

The surprise indie hit of 2023 is back on top of the box office.

Angel Studios’ faith-focused movie Sound of Freedom climbed back to No. 1 on Monday and then stayed there Tuesday, beating not only a Disney film but also a horror movie that had won the top spot over the weekend.

On Tuesday, Sound of Freedom grossed $3.8 million, edging No. 2 Insidious: The Red Door ($3.48 million) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ($3.46 million), according to data on BoxOfficeMojo.com.

On Monday, Sound of Freedom took in $4 million, topping second-place Insidious: The Red Door ($3.5 million) and third-place Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ($3.2 million).

Sound of Freedom was No. 1 on both nights despite playing in fewer theaters (2,852 compared to 3,188 for Insidious and 4,600 for Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny).

Insidious, a horror movie, was No. 1 over the weekend.

“First Indiana Jones, next Insidious,” Jeffrey Harmon, chief content officer of Angel Studios, tweeted.

It was the third No. 1 win for Sound of Freedom following its opening in the top spot on the Fourth of July. Harmon later joked with a smiling emoji, “Then mission impossible comes out and we will have to settle for #2,” – referencing this week’s opening of the Tom Cruise film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Sound of Freedom has now grossed $50 million.

The film tells the true story of a government agent, Tim Ballard, who quit his job at the Department of Homeland Security so he could dedicate his life to rescuing children in other countries from sex trafficking. Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) portrays Ballard.

The film received an A+ CinemaScore from moviegoers and has a “fresh” rating of 77 on Rotten Tomatoes (meaning 77 percent of critics liked it).
