Judicial reform protestors near Jerusalem in march amid heatwave

Tens of thousands of protestors restarted the march to Jerusalem on Saturday morning through extreme heat and causing major highway congestion leading to police deployment, according to Hebrew media.

Protestors blocked Highway 1 as they headed to the Knesset and plan to where they will set up camp ahead of the vote on the pending in Knesset Sunday morning.

This is the fifth consecutive day of additional protests against the proposed judicial reform. Due to continued congestion and expected escalation, police deployed two riot police near Hamed Junction as well as water cannons earlier this morning, according to Israeli media.

Protestors were expected to arrive later on Saturday in anticipation of attempts to revoke the reasonableness clause on Sunday, however they mobilized earlier in the day.

Community efforts on the road to Jerusalem

Along the highway, vehicles parked on the side have become impromptu hydration and snack stations for those marching through an extreme heatwave that people throughout Israel are facing. Sporting colorful signs that have “democracy” written on them, stands were ways that community members could support each other.

Water, lemonade, cakes and cookies, and the like have been made available to those on the march, Hebrew media reported. In the last five days, businesses and private individuals came to provide their contributions as well.

Protestors told Hebrew media outlet Walla! that though the weather conditions are tough, they are a small payoff. “It’s hot for us, but it’s nothing compared to the hell that will be here if we don’t go,” Ruthi Tovi Tzur told Walla! Saturday morning.
