Cade Thompson ‘Declares God’s Goodness’ on Sophomore Album: I Want to ‘Lead People Back to Him’
The CCM artist who climbed into the Billboard Top 20 in 2020 with the hit single Every Step of the Way is back with a new album and says he’s on a mission to declare “God’s goodness.”
This year, Cade Thompson released his sophomore album, Empty Room, which includes the upbeat radio single Good God and two other popular tracks, Arms of Jesus and Tears.
Thompson burst onto the Christian music scene with his debut album Bigger Story, which included Every Step of the Way and Provider. His music has 60 million streams.
A turning point in his music-centric life, he said, occurred when he sang a Christian song at a public school talent show.
“I was in eighth grade. And I was about to try out for the school talent show, which in eighth grade is a pretty big deal,” Thompson told Christian Headlines. “And I thought about maybe singing an Ed Sheeran song or something like that. But there was a mentor in my life that said, ‘Hey, why don’t you sing a Christian song at a public school?’ And I did. And I got into the talent show.”
The audience gave him positive feedback, he said.
“I remember stepping out on that stage that night, and seeing the power of the gospel and the power of music come together, which is the power of Christian music, which is why I do what I do today,” he told Christian Headlines. “And I grew up listening to Christian music and listening to Christian radio. And I saw at a very young age that [these songs are] not just empty words, but those words were actually truths that pointed me to give my life to Jesus at the age of 10 years old, which is why I’m doing what I’m doing today. And I couldn’t think of any better way to use this power of music to lead people back to Him.”
Thompson’s label is Red Street Records, an independent company founded by Rascal Flatts member Jay DeMarcus. He describes his music style as “energetic, authentic, real and compassionate. That style is heard in the song Good God, which Thompson said he wrote after working on a few songs with more “heavy” themes.
“I was like, ‘Guys, I need to write a song that just declares God’s goodness’ – even when I don’t feel it, that I can sing this song over my life declaring that God is good. I started with this guitar riff just playing, and the chorus opened up itself. It’s a special song.”
