Gunshots at Border as Smugglers Take Aim at Agents; Border Patrol Agents Shot At After Encountering Migrant Group in Otay Mountain Wilderness; Images Show Men Armed with Rifles, Body Armor Coming Across Southern Border

Gunshots at border as smugglers take aim at agents:

Homeland Security has detected multiple instances of people armed with guns sneaking into the U.S. from Mexico, including one where agents trying to arrest a group of illegal immigrants came under fire twice.

None of the agents were injured and the gunman — and the group of illegal immigrants — escaped back to Mexico, but the Aug. 18 incident alarmed the Border Patrol, which said it is seeing an “escalating” level of violence.

That incursion took place in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area, a rugged terrain in California that is often used by groups of migrants.

Days later, National Guard troops assigned to assist the Border Patrol were using a scope to keep tabs on the wilderness area and they spotted an armed person climb over the border fence.

A day later, two more armed persons were spotted in the same place.

The Border Patrol’s tactical response team was deployed but reported “negative results,” the agency said in a statement. No shots were reported in either of those incursions.

But in the Aug. 18 one, agents faced two volleys of shots.

Border Patrol agents shot at after encountering migrant group in Otay Mountain Wilderness:

A group of U.S. Border Patrol agents were shot at earlier this month when they came across a group of suspected migrants in the Otay Mountain Wilderness area in East County, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred about 10 p.m. Aug. 18 when the agents said they were attempting to apprehend a group of suspected migrants entering the United States, the Border Patrol said in a news release Friday.

An agent said a person in the group fired multiple shots in their direction, Border Patrol officials said. Agents heard gunshots and saw “muzzle flashes.” Additional agents were called.

After backup arrived, a second volley of bullets came from the migrant group, officials said. The agents took cover and the migrants headed back into Mexico, officials said.

No agents were wounded.

Four days later, U.S. National Guard troops reported seeing an armed individual climb the international border fence in the same area. A day later, two people were seen in the area armed with rifles. —>READ MORE HERE
