California Tries to Put the State Above Parents:

Adults who keep secrets with other people’s children violate commonsense safeguards of minors and must be stopped. Shamefully, this is exactly the kind of behavior California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, seeks to enable.

Last Monday, Bonta sued a Southern California school district over its new policy that sensibly requires schools to notify parents within three days when their child requests to be treated as the opposite (or neither) sex.

In his filing, Bonta alleges that the Chino Valley Unified School District “singled out an especially vulnerable group of children and youth for discriminatory treatment: transgender and gender nonconforming students.”

Bonta is correct that young people confused or distressed by their sex are a vulnerable population. They are at higher risk of mental-health problems. They are also at high risk of being ushered down an irreversible medical pathway that can result in sterility and sexual dysfunction. That’s precisely why their parents’ involvement in all aspects of their care is so critical. And why it is so dangerous to drive a wedge between these children and their families.

Yet, time and time again, that is what transgender activists across the country have done. Take the case of the Littlejohn family, in Tallahassee, Fla., who say they informed their daughter’s school that they did not consent to social transition, only to learn later that school personnel had been having secret meetings with their 13-year-old, asking which restroom she wanted to use and which sex she wanted to stay with on overnight trips. —>READ MORE HERE

It Takes a Village, but in California Parents Aren’t Welcome

A state challenge to a school gender-identity policy shows how ideologues think families can’t be trusted with their own children.

Remember Hillary Clinton’s line that it takes a village to raise a child? Now the left is trying to exile parents from the village. Consider its crusade against minority parents in Chino, Calif., a predominantly minority working-class community east of Los Angeles.

Last week California Attorney General Rob Bonta sued the Chino Valley Unified School Board of Education over its new policy—adopted by a 4-1 vote at a July 20 meeting—that requires schools to inform parents if their child requests to use a name different from that on his birth certificate or to be referred to by opposite-sex or nonstandard pronouns. A district spokesperson says the policy provides an exception requiring staff to notify Child Protective Services and law enforcement if “the student is in danger or has been abused, injured, or neglected due to their parent or guardian knowing of their preferred gender identity.”

Tony Thurmond, California’s state superintendent of schools, declared at the public meeting: “The policy you consider tonight may not only fall outside of privacy laws but may put our students at risk.” That’s false, but Mr. Bonta makes the same arguments in his lawsuit.

The attorney general contends, among other things, that Chino Valley’s policy violates students’ putative right to “informational privacy” under the state constitution. Under this novel legal theory, teachers wouldn’t be able to notify parents of misbehavior or bullying. Report cards would be unconstitutional too.

Liberals claim Chino Valley’s policy was driven by right-wing bigots, but the district is by no stretch a conservative bastion. Republicans make up only about a third of voters, and only 12% of students are white. The policy was spurred by parents of all colors and political stripes who complained that school employees were encouraging their children to adopt opposite-sex identities.

“I am a single father of three children and a first generation African and Hispanic Muslim American. For all intents and purposes, I am the poster-boy for a liberal,” Cecil Howell wrote in a letter to the local newspaper. “Parental entitlement to full access of every aspect of their child’s health information has been the foregone assumption in this country for over 200 years.” Mr. Howell added that the majority of district parents support the policy. —>READ MORE HERE
