Christian Rock Singer Mylon LeFevre Dies at 78

Skillet frontman John Cooper paid tribute to Christian rock icon Mylon LeFevre, who passed away from cancer last Friday.

LeFevre, 78, was best known for his band, Mylon and Broken Heart, for which he was the lead singer. He recorded more than 20 albums and won a Grammy Award and a Dove Award with his band for his 1987 album Crack The Sky, ChurchLeaders.com reports.

“So we’ve got some super bad news. My very good friend and Christian music icon Mylon LeFevre… passed away, I guess, last night. I love Mylon. He was just a great friend to me and a great mentor to me in the last few years,” Cooper said in a video posted to Facebook.

Cooper noted that while he does not usually post on private matters, “Mylon deserves to be known and celebrated. He was such a Christian music hero, a revolutionary for Christ—his testimony is unbelievable.”

He also pointed to the late singer’s ability to quote Scripture from the King James Bible.

“I’ve never known anybody that quotes the Bible as much as Mylon. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” Cooper recalled.

“He was a great mentor to me, and I love him, and I love his family and just want to say thank you to him for everything he did,” he continued.

The Skillet frontman recalled how LeFevre often called him, prayed for him, and offered him advice.

“And it always seemed to be at a time when something was going down, and I needed prayer the most,” Cooper remembered of his friend and mentor.

“So, I owe him a lot, and my family owes him a lot. I’m just shocked and I’m sad,” Cooper concluded.

LeFevre was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2005. His parents and uncle were part of the southern gospel singing group, The LeFevres. LeFevre’s last album, Bow Down, was produced by his son-in-law and former Newsboys lead singer Peter Furler in 2003.
