Protesters gather in New York, Tel Aviv as PM arrives for Biden meeting
Protestors shouting “Democracy” stood holding Israeli flags outside the Manhattan hotel where US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to hold their first face to face meeting since Israel’s new government was sworn in at the end of December.
Top on their agenda is expected to be Biden’s push to finalize a security pact with Saudi Arabia that would include a normalization deal with Israel as well as Iran continued enrichment of uranium which is close to weapons grade.
Netanyahu is already in the hotel and is waiting to speak to Biden. The meeting had been scheduled to start at 10:15, but has yet to start.
Across the world, hundreds of protesters have gathered outside of the US Embassy in Tel Aviv, blocking Herbert Samuel Street.
Protests draw several movements to demonstrate
Both in New York City and Tel Aviv, protesters showed up in scores. A statement made by leaderes of the Student Protest Movement said: “Student Protest Movement and other protesters gathered outside US embassies in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to send a clear message: the world must not stand by as Israel’s government works to dismantle Israeli democracy,” adding, “When only a narrow coalition of Israel’s leadership can control all the branches of government, Israel can not remain a democratic nation.”
