Holy Land Movie Route 60 Opens in Top 5, Gets Extended: ‘Overwhelmingly Positive Reception’

A faith-based film showcasing the biblical sites of the Holy Land opened in the Top 5 this week and is being extended.

Route 60: The Biblical Highway finished No. 4 at the box office Tuesday, leading TBN and Fathom Events to extend the movie through Thursday, Sept. 21. The film follows former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as they visit the sites of Scripture along a 3,000-year-old ancient route that is now a modern paved highway. Friedman is Jewish, and Pompeo is Christian.

Route 60: The Biblical Highway grossed $764,316 Tuesday, trailing only A Haunting in Venice ($1.7 million), The Nun II ($1.4 million) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 ($816,475).

“It’s wonderful to see the overwhelmingly positive reception Route 60: The Biblical Highway has received over the last couple of days and we are excited to give people another opportunity to see it in theaters,” said TBN president Matt Crouch.

“The story of this historic highway, with mile markers both physical and historical, is so powerful – and we were granted unique access to places in Israel that aren’t typically acceptable in a traditional tour,” Crouch added. “Shooting this film was a spiritually uplifting experience that we can’t wait to share with the world.”

The film was initially scheduled to be in theaters for only two nights, Sept. 18-19. Its success led to it being extended two additional nights. It grossed a total of $1,606,339 for the first two nights.

“Almost all of the biblical stories that we learned about when we were younger and we still study to this day, they all occurred, or most of them occurred, on the road, or within a kilometer or two of the road,” Friedman told Christian Headlines.
