House Republicans will hold their first hearing next week concerning the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
The hearing is scheduled for Sept. 28 and will focus on “constitutional and legal questions” surrounding allegations of Biden’s involvement with his son’s business affairs overseas, the Associated Press reports.
The White House has said the inquiry is “extreme politics at its worst.”
“Staging a political stunt hearing in the waning days before they may shut down the government reveals their true priorities: To them, baseless personal attacks on President Biden are more important than preventing a government shutdown and the pain it would inflict on American families.,” Ian Sams, a White House spokesman, said in a statement Tuesday.
As part of the inquiry, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., chairman of Oversight, plans to issue subpoenas for the personal and business bank records of Hunter Biden and the president’s brother James Biden “as early as this week.”
The hearing comes after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy ordered the U.S. House to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden.
“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives,” McCarthy, R-Calif., said.
The impeachment inquiry is just one step in the process of formal impeachment. Following the investigation, which could take anywhere from a few months to over a year, the House Judiciary Committee could then draft the articles of impeachment, or charges, against the president, USA Today reports.
A House majority must then vote to adopt the articles. After that, the charges would go to the Senate for an impeachment trial, presided over by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
If the Senate rules Biden is guilty, the president would be removed and unable to serve in office ever again.
