House Republicans are building a case to potentially impeach President Joe Biden as inquiry hearings started in the House Oversight Committee this week.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said he believes evidence shows Biden abused his role by being involved in Hunter Biden’s “family business.”
“Today, the House Oversight Committee will examine over two dozen pieces of evidence revealing Joe Biden’s corruption and abuse of public office,” Comer said during his opening remarks.
According to Reuters, critics say Hunter and Biden used the “Joe Biden” brand in their business dealings.
“Whether it was lunches, phone calls, White House meetings, or official foreign trips, Hunter Biden cashed in by arranging access to Joe Biden, the family brand,” said Rep. Jason Smith (R-MS).
The White House has denied the claims.
Meanwhile, Ranking Democrat Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said there is no “smoking gun” or valid evidence against Biden.
Raskin said, instead, that U.S. officials need to be focusing on a possible government shutdown.
“The consequences for the American people will be very damaging,” the White House said at the hearing’s outset. “Nothing can distract from that.”
House Republicans would need a majority vote and the end of the inquiry to start impeachment proceedings.
In the Senate, Democrats hold a 51-49 majority, where it would be unlikely a vote would pass to remove Biden from office.
House Republicans have said they plan to seek personal and business bank records for Hunter and James Biden, the president’s brother.
Comer referred explicitly to payment records from Chinese nationals to Hunter in 2019, listing Joe Biden’s home address in Delaware as the beneficiary address. There’s no evidence that Biden received payment.
“Once again, Rep. Comer peddles lies to support a premise – some wrongdoing by Hunter Biden or his family – that evaporates in thin air the moment facts come out,” said Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, in a statement on Thursday. Lowell said the money was a loan and that the address listed was the address on Hunter’s driver’s license at the time.
