Israel to Launch Ground Assault on Hamas, Gaza Strip
Israeli troops are preparing for a ground assault on the Gaza Strip in retaliation to Hamas’ massacre of thousands of Israelis over the weekend.
As reported by CBN News, Israel’s Defense Forces have launched airstrikes on Hamas inside the Gaza Strip as troops seek. At the same time, the terror organization continues to fire rockets into southern Israel.
“We are destroying Hamas’s ability to function as a sovereign; it is no longer managing to administer Gaza,” Israel’s top military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Thursday.
As of Thursday, more than 1,300 Israelis have been killed since Hamas’ assault took place. Meanwhile, Gaza officials say the airstrikes have killed at least 1,200 people. Per the Associated Press, the death toll of Americans in Israel increased to 25 on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Benny Gantz came together to form a national emergency government. According to Axios, Gantz’s experience as a former defense minister while providing further assistance in security experience around the discussion table.
“People of Israel, tonight we created a national emergency government. Israel is united, and tonight, its leaders are united too. We’ve put aside every other consideration because the fate of our country is laid on the table,” said Netanyahu.
“We saw boys and girls bound, who were shot in the head. Men and women were burned alive—young women who were raped and slaughtered. Soldiers who were beheaded,” he continued.
In addition to the airstrikes, Israel has cut off resources, including food, water, fuel, and medicine, to Hamas in Gaza, while the access point to Egypt was also closed due to the airstrikes.
On Wednesday, Egyptian security sources said that the U.S. and Egypt have discussed plans to administer humanitarian aid through the Egyptian border of the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported. However, Egypt rejects any plans to establish safe corridors for Gazan refugees.
On the other hand, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the U.S. has discussed providing a safe passage for civilians from Gaza with Israel and Egypt. Those discussions are currently ongoing, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday.
Gaza, which has been under control by Hamas since 2007, is a tiny coastal strip of land between Israel in the north and east and Egypt. It is home to a population of about 2.3 million and remains under a blockade since Hamas took over.
