Ukraine war latest: Military reports advance in southeast, indicates Ukrainian forces cross Dnipro:
The Ukrainian military reported an advance in southeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast while also indicating its forces had crossed the Dnirpro River in southern Kherson Oblast on Oct. 19.
The commander of the Tavria Group fighting on the southern front lines, General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, reported Ukrainian forces have achieved partial success southwest of Verbove in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Ukrainian forces clashed with Russian troops 34 times over the past day, with Russia losing 322 soldiers and 43 pieces of military hardware, including three tanks, 12 artillery pieces, and 13 drones, according to the report.
Ukraine has recently focused its efforts around Verbove, a village around 10 kilometers east of liberated Robotyne.
Spokesperson of the Tavria Group, Oleksandr Shtupun, reported an advance of up to one kilometer west of Verbove on Oct. 17.
Meanwhile, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces in its Oct. 19 morning update indicated the presence of Ukrainian forces in the village of Pishchanivka on the east bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast.
The strikes were reported in the General Staff’s Oct. 19 and Oct. 18 daily updates, matching reports from Russian Telegram channels that Ukraine had reclaimed territory in the area.
Ukrainian forces liberated Kherson and other regional settlements on the Dnipro River’s west bank in November 2022, pushing Russian forces to the east bank, from where they have since been firing at the liberated territories.
In August, the Kyiv Independent reported that Ukrainian troops have been conducting small overnight raids into the Russian-occupied part of Kherson Oblast for months. —>READ MORE HERE
US-supplied ATACMS enter the Ukraine war:
Ukrainian forces used U.S.-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles for the first time this week, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy saying on Tuesday that the weapons had “proven themselves.”
Ukraine had repeatedly asked the U.S. for ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems), which Kyiv has pledged not to use inside Russia’s territory.
The Biden administration may soon begin shipping to Ukraine several variants of Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), a long-range missile system that often carries varying amounts of cluster bomblets.
Senior Ukrainian officials have said they could help alter the course of the 20-month-old war, allowing Ukrainian forces to disrupt previously unreachable supply lines, air bases and rail networks used by Russia in occupied territories.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday the missiles would not significantly change the battlefield situation. The following information relies heavily on U.S. Army presentations and budget data.
– The M39 Block I ATACMS is a guided missile with a range of 25 to 165 km (15 to 100 miles) that carries a payload of 950 anti-personnel and equipment-destroying bomblets. The M39 Block I was added to the U.S. arsenal in 1991 and is no longer in production. There were about 1,650 made with several hundred used in conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to Army documents. Remaining units are being modernized to a version what does not contain cluster munitions. The Pentagon says the dud rate – the percentage of distributed munitions that do not explode once deployed – is classified.
– M39A1 Block IA ATACMS is guided in part by GPS and has a range of 70 to 300 km (40 to 190 miles) carrying a payload of 300 M74 bomblets. There were 610 produced with about 74 used in Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to Army documents. The M39 Block IA joined the U.S. arsenal in 1997 and is no longer in production, with remaining units being modernized to a version that does not contain cluster munitions. The Pentagon says the dud rate is classified. According to a Reuters review of Army documents and budget documents – less than 1,114 M39 and M39A1 warheads remain in stores due to field use and the modification program. —>READ MORE HERE
